U.S Embassy in Dhaka has again issued a security alert for U.S citizens

The Government of Bangladesh extended its lockdown (curfew) indefinitely, ordering everyone to stay inside except during announced breaks, which are increasingly longer in duration.  The Bangladeshi Army has been deployed nationwide.  This is in response to student demonstrations against quotas for government jobs which have led to violent clashes in the city of Dhaka, its neighboring areas, and throughout Bangladesh.  Guns, tear gas, and other weapons have been used in the vicinity of the U.S. Embassy.  Although the situation has calmed in recent days, it remains unpredictable.  Fixed-line internet services are available, but expect bandwidth throttling and frequent disconnects.  The government began restoring mobile internet services today.

Due to the unpredictable nature of the protests and the government response, U.S. citizens should practice vigilance and consider returning to the United States.  Avoid demonstrations and exercise caution in the vicinity of any large gatherings.  Review personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates.  If you wish to contact family members, phone service, SMS, and internet are intermittently available.

The road to Dhaka’s main airport, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC), remains open.  The airport is operating close to normal, with both international and domestic flights.  Passengers must present a ticket or e-ticket (printed, digital, or SMS copy) which will act as a curfew pass.  Note that passengers are requested to come early due to slower check-in and security screening procedures.

With some restoration of internet, ticket offices and travel agencies are now open.  U.S.-Bangla is allowing passengers to buy tickets at the airport by cash or credit card.  Cathay Pacific is selling tickets by phone from a remote location by credit card.  Local contact information for some airline offices is below:

  1. Cathay Pacific – +88 01766-698170 or +88 01766-698168
  2. Emirates – +88 09609-001133
  3. Qatar Airways – +88 09610-800800
  4. Singapore Airlines – +88 02-2222-284982
  5. Thai Airways – +88 02-2222-90023 or +88 02-2222-96225

U.S. Embassy Dhaka will begin offering limited, routine consular services starting July 29.  Shelter in place for mission personnel will also be lifted at that time, but personnel are confined to movements within the diplomatic enclave.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid large crowds and protests, shelter in place when necessary
  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times
  • Monitor local news
  • Remain vigilant
  • Always carry your charged mobile phone for emergency communications
