Lightning is identified as one of the major causes of weatherrelated deaths. It was declared as a natural disaster in Bangladesh in 2016 when 81 people lost their lives in just two days. In recent years, occurrence of lightning disasters have increased due to climate change.
To increase awareness on lightning disasters, a daylong seminar and workshop titled “Lightning and Thunderstorm: Forecasting, Awareness and Protection” was arranged by Electric, Electronic and Communication Engineering (EECE) Department in Military Institute of Science & Technology (MIST) today (9th August 2018).
The program consisted of technical talks for spreading awareness and knowledge for prevention and protection from natural disasters caused by lightning, followed by a workshop. The primary objective of this seminar was to impart knowledge so that one can understand the significance of lightning protection and take necessary steps accordingly.
The technical session covered discussions on lightning incidents in Bangladesh including precaution and safety measures against it. A workshop held at the end that provided hands on practical knowledge on designing a lightning arrester.
In the seminar, Engineer Mosharrof Hossain MP, Honorable Minister, Ministry of Housing and Public Works was present as the Chief Guest. Major General Md Abul Khair, ndc,PEng, Commandant, MIST was the Chief Patron of the seminar. Representatives from various ministries, three services, government and autonomous organizations, universities and service providing agencies also attended the seminar.
