On 20 February, the UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, Gwyn Lewis, had a courtesy meeting with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina.
The Prime Minister and UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh spoke of the important cooperation between the UN and Bangladesh in responding to climate-related disasters and economic volatility. They reaffirmed commitments to strengthen the UN-Bangladesh partnership on the Rohingya refugee response, despite funding shortages that forced cuts in food assistance for Rohingya refugees living in camps in Cox’s Bazar.
The Prime Minister also spoke of Bangladesh’s important development initiatives in education, housing, health care, and the promotion of women’s rights. They also exchanged views on Bangladesh’s economic growth ahead of the Fifth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in Doha, Qatar, on 5-9 March.
