Bangladesh Embassy in Lisbon celebrated the 72nd Birth Anniversary of valiant freedom fighter Shaheed Captain Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Thursday, 05 August 2021 with due fervour and solemnity. However, the event was held on a limited scale in terms of physical participation in accordance with the restrictions imposed by the Portuguese Government due to the covid-19 pandemic.
The celebration began with a discussion session on the life and works of Shaheed Captain Sheikh Kalam on this occasion at the Embassy premises. Officers and the members of staff of the Embassy took part in the discussion, highlighting the glorious life of Shaheed Captain Sheikh Kamal and his contributions to the political, cultural, social and sports arena of Bangladesh.
At the outset of the speech, Ambassador Tarik Ahsan paid rich tribute to the memory of the valiant Freedom Fighter Shaheed Captain Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of the greatest Bangalee of thousand years, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Reminiscing the heroic life events of Shaheed Captain Sheikh Kamal, Ambassador said that Sheikh Kamal was as courageous and voiceful as Bangabandhu in realizing the rights and emancipation of the Bangalee people. He actively participated in 6 points and 11 point movements, in the mass uprising of 1969 and the great Liberation War of 1971 as a dedicated fighter, organizer and ideological activist of the Bangladesh Chhatra League. He was also one of the foremost organizers of the sports and cultural movement of post-independent Bangladesh.
Ambassador added that the short life span of 26 years of Shaheed Captain Sheikh Kamal was graced by remarkable achievements. The life and works of multitalented Shaheed Captain Sheikh Kamal will remain a source of inspiration for the people of Bangladesh, particularly for the young generations.
A documentary on the life and work of Shaheed Captain Sheikh Kamal titled “Sheikh Kamal: A Tale of Legend” was also screened after the discussion session.
Later, a special prayer was offered seeking divine blessings for Bangabandhu, Shaheed Captain Sheikh Kamal and other martyred members of his family as well as for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of the country.
