On July 21, 2024, considering the current situation in Bangladesh the US Embassy in Dhaka said in a Message of a Security Alert, The Government of Bangladesh extended its curfew indefinitely, ordering everyone to stay inside. The Bangladeshi Army has been deployed nationwide. This is in response to ongoing student demonstrations against quotas for government jobs which have led to violent clashes in the city of Dhaka, its neighboring areas, and throughout Bangladesh. Reports indicate over 150 confirmed deaths and thousands injured across Bangladesh. Guns, tear gas, and other weapons have been used in the vicinity of the U.S. Embassy. The situation is extremely volatile and unpredictable. Protests continue to affect local transportation services with travel in, out, and around Dhaka difficult. There continues to be no fixed or mobile internet service available.
U.S. citizens should practice vigilance and reconsider their travel plans. Shelter in place if near affected areas. You should avoid demonstrations and exercise caution in the vicinity of any large gatherings. Review personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. If you wish to contact family members, phone service and SMS continue to be intermittently available.
Due to the situation, the U.S. Embassy Dhaka continues to offer only limited services at this time. Mission personnel have been advised to shelter in place until further notice.
