The U.S. Department of State’s Deputy Coordinator for the Bureau of Counterterrorism and countering violent extremism visits in Bangladesh.

The U.S. Department of State’s Deputy Coordinator for Counterterrorism John T. Godfrey visited Bangladesh August 18-19 to discuss with Government of Bangladesh (GOB) officials and otherpartners counterterrorism and countering violent extremism (CT/CVE) priorities in Bangladesh and the region, and cooperation with the United States in these areas.

Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R. Miller and Godfrey met with Foreign Secretary Haque to discuss partnering with Bangladesh on CT/CVE initiatives in Bangladesh and the region.  Godfrey also met with Bangladesh’s Anti-Terrorism Unit and itsCounter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit to review implementation of bilateral CT/CVE programs,related to law enforcement and the judiciary.  The discussions addressed areas of mutual concern, including countering radicalization and recruitment in Bangladesh and the region, and the importance of respecting human rights and the rule of law in an effective counterterrorism strategy

Ambassador Miller and Deputy Coordinator Godfrey also participated in a livelyroundtable discussion with CT/CVE experts from academia, media, NGOs, and other sectors, sharingpolicies, priorities, and recommendations for addressing terrorism concerns in Bangladesh and the region.
