In one of the most highly anticipated faceoffs of the Olympic Games Paris 2024, it was Australia’s reigning Olympic champion Kaylee McKeown who came out on top to defeat world record holder Regan Smith and take the gold medal in the women’s 100m backstroke final on Tuesday 30 July.
McKeown clocked an Olympic record with her time of 57.33, with Smith finishing just 0.33 seconds behind to take the silver in 57.66.
Between the two, they own the 15 fastest times in the history of the event, so this was a matchup for the ages.
USA’s Katharine Berkoff took the bronze medal with a time of 57.98.
