Reigning World Cup champion Germany failed to reach the knockout stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, held in Russia. In the final match of the group stage, South Korea defeated Germany with 2-0 win.
Kim Young-gwon scored the first goal in the third minute of added time. Son Heung-min made it 2-0 in the sixth minute of added time.
The German team placed fourth in Group F with three points. South Korea also earned three points, but placed third due to the goal differential.
In another Group F match, which took place at the same time, Sweden defeated Mexico with a crushing 3-0 score, and placed first in the group, making it to the knockout stage of the tournament. Sweden earned six points and led the group, while Mexicans placed second (6 points) due to additional indicators. South Korea placed third with three points, and Germany took the fourth place with three points as well.
The Group E matches, which will take place later on Wednesday, will determine whom Mexico and Sweden will play against in the first round of the knockout stage. Mexicans will play their next game on July 2 in Samara, while Sweden will face their Group E rivals on July 3 in St. Petersburg.
