China, Japan and South Korea’s first trilateral summit for three years will focus on the denuclearisation of North Korea and trilateral cooperation, it has been announced.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang will attend the meeting, which is to be held in Tokyo on the sidelines of his visit to Japan between May 8 and 11, China’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday. The leaders of the three East Asian countries are expected to discuss how they can help rid North Korea of nuclear weapons and promote regional cooperation.
Seoul declared that South Korean President Moon Jae-in would brief Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and China’s Li on his historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un last week. He will also call for joint efforts to achieve permanent peace on Korean Peninsula, according to The Paper.
Initiated in 2008, the trilateral summit has been held annually since, but was suspended in 2013-2014 and 2016-2017 due to various territorial and historic disputes.
This year’s meeting, set to be held next Wednesday, will mark Moon’s first visit to Japan since taking office in May 2017, as well as the first trip taken by a sitting South Korean president to Japan since 2011. It is also going to be the first visit of a Chinese premier to Tokyo visit for seven years.
As Tokyo and Seoul have close ties to the US and Beijing is North Korea’s only major ally, this meeting has the potential to further complicate the rhetoric surrounding President Trump’s upcoming meeting with Kim Jong-un.
