Report by Humayun Kabir from Lisbon Portugal.
Princess Leonor, the heir to the Spanish throne, made her first official visit alone at the invitation of neighboring Portugal’s president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The future Queen of Spain, 18, has taken part in several events reinforcing the importance of environmental protection and marine conservation, issues of great importance to both Portugal and Spain
The visit began at 11:30 am with a ceremony to lay a wreath at the tomb of Luís de Camões, in the Jerónimos Monastery. At noon, the Princess of Asturias was received by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, with military honors, at the Belém Palace. During this period the national anthems of Portugal and Spain were played.
Immediately after the ceremony, there was a lunch hosted by the President of the Republic and, at 3:15 p.m., Princess Leonor visited the Oceano Azul Foundation, at the Lisbon Oceanarium. It was a short but symbolic visit that reflected the environmental efforts of Portugal and Spain and reinforced the union between the two sister countries.
